Publisher Sees ‘No Evidence’ That Amazon Kindle is More Profitable Than Sony Reader
We keep hearing from Amazon that the Kindle is sold out and it’s doing great, yet we’ve yet to receive any concrete numbers to confirm the company’s excitement. In a quick interview with the Silicon Alley Insider, Arthur Klebanoff, the CEO of e-book publisher RosettaBooks, declared that he has so far seen no evidence that the Bezo-Box has generated any more revenue for his company than Sony’s e-Reader. And if you know anything about Sony’s Reader, is that it hasn’t been considered a runaway success by anyone. Still, Klebanoff and other insiders have noted that for these types of new products, it takes more than a year to really understand their value in the marketplace, since the delivery system, the hardware, and the idea of the technology’s availability is all new to many consumers. EFF, ALC sue Homeland Security over laptop, gadget searches
Posted Feb 8th 2008 3:44PM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Cellphones, Handhelds, Laptops The EFF sure has set it sights high with its latest lawsuit, with it now teaming up with the Asian Law Caucus (ALC) to sue the Department of Homeland Security over laptop and gadget searches and other alleged infringements of civil liberties at U.S. borders. Specifically, the two groups are asking for the DHS to disclose its policies on questioning travelers on First Amendment-protected activities, including the photocopying of individuals’ papers, and the searching of laptops and other electronic devices. According to the EFF, that rather drastic move was prompted by the DHS’s failure to meet a 20-day time limit Congress had set for responding to public information requests. Microsoft’s response to the “Save Windows XP” campaign

Microsoft’s response to the “Save Windows XP” campaign
Just recently we told you about the ongoing campaign to help “save Windows XP” from its certain death. As it stands now Microsoft will stop issuing new licenses for XP as of June 30, 2008 and based on their latest response it seems that date will hold true. A Microsoft spokesperson recently stated that they are “aware of it” when referring to the campaign, and went on to state that they are listening “first and foremost to feedback we hear from partners and customers about what makes sense based on their needs.” Well at last count the petition had just over 75,000 signatures on it, if that is not enough customer feedback than I am just not sure what they would be looking for. Here come the MacBook Pro mockups: get yours in before it’s too late

Here come the MacBook Pro mockups: get yours in before it’s too late
Posted Feb 8th 2008 12:32PM by Paul MillerFiled under: Features, Laptops It was inevitable, Apple’s got a bit of a new laptop design direction in the MacBook Air, and nothing’s going to stand in the way of the hordes of MacBook Pro Photoshops to follow. This one here is from spicu, and we’re afraid it leaves some proportionality “to the imagination,” but it’s as good we’ve got so far. Think you can do better? Submit yours to contests at engadget dawt com with “MBP mockup” in the subject and we’ll get a little gallery going. Optimists have Apple launching an update in February, and while that rumor might be a tad sketchy at the moment, there’s no better time than the present to make a bid for Photoshop greatness. Review: Lifebook S6510 Travels Without Compromise

Review: Lifebook S6510 Travels Without Compromise
Fujitsu’s S6510 snorts at the MacBook Air. It may be thicker, but by stuffing a 14-inch display, beefy specs, and an optical drive into a form factor usually reserved for 13.3-inch models, it’s all about  bringing power, not fashion, to the portable pot. Just don’t let it near your groin when it’s been running for a while, okay? It can kick up some dust, thanks to a T7700 Core 2 Duo CPU, up to  4GB of RAM, a DVD burner, Intel X3100 video chipset and every flavor  of Wi-Fi. Most striking of all is the WXGA LED-backlit display, which  has almost no bezel either side (see our S6510 gallery), and less than an inch of frame at the top and bottom: if the  rest of it weren’t so businesslike, it would be quite the looker. If you read Ubergizmo on a regular basis, you might have seen previous stories about Navizon. It is a mapping application that triangulates cell towers’ location to provide a rough estimate of your iPhone’s position. Think of it as a GPS Emulator except that it is not as accurate as the real thing.

The latest version of Navizon features a user interface update but it will most importantly run in the background and keep your position updated, even if you are using another application.

Review: Novatel Wireless Ovation U727 Gives You Broadband Web Access Everywhere
Forget Hotspots. Forget fumbling with SSIDs. And forget the USB flash memory drive at home. Novatel’s Ovation U727 USB modem stick provides a high-speed connection to the Net just about anyway you wander. Well, at least anywhere there’s a decent cellular signal. That’s because this puppy uses the EV-DO signal, a mobile broadband technology that supplies download speeds from 600kbps to 1.4MBps and uploads averaging 350 to 500Kbps. The USB stick is not much larger than a ubiquitous USB flash drive and is the first one with a micro-SD slot to handle memory cards up to 4GB. Working much like a cell phone, the Ovation needs to be initially activated by the cellular carrier.
