Apple May Have to Unlock iPhone for Aussies
Warranty-abiding gadgeteers may now have a choice between traveling to France or Australia for an officially unlocked iphone. Law experts Down Under say that carrier-exclusivity contracts would clearly run afoul of antitrust laws, so Apple would likely have to offer an unlocked model to enter the market there. Apple Tuesday: super special MacBook Pro, iPhone SDK… or nothing at all?
Posted Feb 25th 2008 11:01AM by Joshua TopolskyFiled under: Misc. gadgets As you may or may not know, Apple has made some sort of announcement — however minor — every Tuesday since the beginning of 2008. The internet is currently stacked floor-to-ceiling with guesses of what this last Tuesday in February will bring. Many are speculating that it’s going to be the often-discussed, never-seen MacBook Pro update, while others are certain that this will be the day old Jobsy unveils iphone’s supposedly-delayed SDK to the world. Still there are those who believe this Tuesday will see the launch of the Apple Robot Army, while many think that we’re going to finally get a look at that iShrink shrink ray that’s been long-rumored. Q Branch Would Approve: The Rinspeed sQuba

Q Branch Would Approve: The Rinspeed sQuba
A cursory glance of the latest Fords, Chevys, Toyotas and cars available from any of the other big automakers in any given year reveals little in the way of truly new or revolutionary features. A redesigned cupholder here, a different color backlight on the instrument panel there, but when you think about it, there is really not a whole lot of difference in the the basic four wheels, four doors, gas-powered car that you can buy today from those our parents, or even our grandparents drove. So I am hoping the Big Three pay attention to this little number coming out soon from RinSpeed–the sQuba. If an electric two-seater that can drive right into the water and dive to a depth of 10 meters sounds like something out of a James Bond movie, it should. Future Retro’s Revolution synthesizer sports circular layout
Posted Feb 25th 2008 5:33AM by Darren MurphFiled under: Portable Audio While certainly not the most bizarre (nor elaborate) musical apparatus we’ve seen, Future Retro’s intriguingly designed Revolution synthesizer still manages to stand out. Apparently, its creators firmly believe that “music is cyclic,” and it’s definitely practicing what it preaches on said device. The analog monophonic synthesizer is contained in a rugged aluminum chassis and is laid out in a way that makes “dividing a measure of music into equal parts” much easier — visually, at least. Towering Gort replica fetching a pretty penny at auction

Towering Gort replica fetching a pretty penny at auction
Posted Feb 25th 2008 3:36AM by Darren MurphFiled under: Robots We’ve seen some pretty fantastic replicas grace the always fascinating pages of eBay before, but this particular creation is apparently hitting home with quite a few wealthy nerds prospective buyers. The fiberglass reproduction of Gort from the famed 1951 classic The Day The Earth Stood Still is currently sitting just above $4,000, and there’s still quite a few hours left for bids to fly in from other galaxies. MetaRam aims to bump RAM capacity by 4x overnight
Posted Feb 25th 2008 12:51AM by Ryan BlockFiled under: Desktops We’re not sure what whacky voodoo snakeoil these MetaRam people are peddling, but the company’s got some high profile behind it (like Intel, for one), is being led by former AMD CTO Fred Weber, has appears to have some potentially revolutionary RAM quadrupling technology. Claiming to have leapfrogged current RAM technology by 2-4 years, MetaRam uses a specialized “MetaSDRAM” chipset that effectively bonds and addresses four cheap 1Gb DRAM chips as one, tricking any machine’s memory controller into using it as a 4x capacity DIMM. Fujitsu MHZ2 BT: the latest 500GB 2.5-inch laptop drive
Posted Feb 25th 2008 2:15AM by Ryan BlockFiled under: Laptops, Storage Solid state is still what gets our motors purring, but 500GB of storage in your laptop isn’t anything to scoff at, either. Fujitsu’s new MHZ2 BT is the second drive to hit the half-terabyte mark, but just like the Hitachi 500 gigger it’s a non-standard height (12.5mm), meaning you won’t be able to slap it in most laptops or enclosures — unless you’re willing to shave out an extra ~3mm of surrounding matter. Expect ‘em out in May. (Read the full post about ‘Fujitsu MHZ2 BT: the latest 500GB 2.5-inch laptop drive’…)
