Written by admin on Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 in gadgets.

Nokia 5000 Cell Phone
Outside of CTIA Wireless, Nokia announced four new cell phones intended for the world’s emerging economy markets. It’s low cost phones like these that made Nokia a worldwide name. This new batch of phones contain some of Nokia’s most affordable phones with features of mid-end phones. First on the list is the Nokia 5000 candybar phone. It has a high-res QVGA display with a 1.3 megapixel camera. It has an mp3 player with recording functionality and FM radio, Bluetooth connectivity, GPRS, and supports Nokia Xpress Audio Messaging. The Nokia 5000 cell phone will ship on the second quarter of 2008 with a MSRP of US$140. (Read the full post about ‘Nokia 5000 Cell Phone’…)

ClarityLife adds new feature to mobile phones: cataracts!
Right, now April 1st has been and gone, we can get on with the real mobile news - thankfully! Apologies to regular readers for the lame April Fool’s joke on April 1st. Everyone else was doing it, but that’s no excuse, and after finding myself bored senseless by reading lame joke after lame joke, I realized that I’d committed the same sin on my own blog! So, no more April Fools from now on! Anyway, on with the news. A newcomer to the mobile phone world, ClarityLife, has released a new mobile phone that offers, well, nothing at all! As you can see from the pic, you get four huge buttons, a monochrome screen, and a one touch emergency button on the back…and that’s it. Shake Powered Torch

Shake Powered Torch
Now, this is ingenious: shake the Shake Torch for approximately 45 seconds. And it gives 5 minutes of light. No batteries needed. Plus, it has an everlasting LED light rather than a bulb. So no spares needed either. Ingenious, wouldn’t you agree?

Inexpensive Garfield MP3 player

Written by admin on Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 in gadgets.

Inexpensive Garfield MP3 player
There are three things I’ve always liked about Garfield: his love for Pooky (his teddy bear), the way he looks when tucked into his bed, and his appetite for pans of lasagna. Today I think I’ll add a fourth thing: the cost of his MP3 player. The Garfield mp3 player may only have 256MB of internal flash memory, but it’s got an SD card slot, comes with matching earbuds, has a built-in microphone for voice recordings, and is only $8. For an additional $6, Surplus Computers will even give you a free 1GB SD card. Beat that, Nermal! Via Chip Chick. (Read the full post about ‘Inexpensive Garfield MP3 player’…)

40+ Ubisoft games heading to Steam

Written by admin on Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 in gadgets.

Just a couple of weeks after Steam started selling digital copies of the Unreal games, Ubisoft has announced it is bringing more than 40 games to Valve’s online distribution service.

Right now you can get Far Cry and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell with a 10% discount if you purchase them before April 8. Another coupe for Steam is the fact you can also pre-order the PC version of Assassin’s Creed, so you will be able to play it the moment it is released via Steam’s pre-loading service.

Other titles we can expect to see in the near future include a selection of their Tom Clancy games, Heroes of Might and Magic games and the IL-2 Sturmovik collection.

Nike+ SportBand, Coach gets official

Nike+ SportBand, Coach gets official
Posted Apr 2nd 2008 12:31PM by Darren MurphFiled under: Wearables Right on cue, Nike’s making things official with its oft-rumored (and still unpriced) Nike+ SportBand and even had the time to toss in details about Nike+ Coach, too. The band, which opens up features at the NikePlus website along with enabling runners to check out distance, pace, time and calories burned, is indeed marketed as a standalone device for those who’d prefer not to have a DAP flanking their arm when exercising. Moreover, the outfit’s online Nike+ Coach system will allow runners to have the information they need to appropriately train for long distance events or achieve customized goals. Nuance is latest entrant to Voicemail-to-Text field

Written by admin on Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 in gadgets.

In what seems to be a crowded field, speech and imaging company Nuance, joined the fray with their voicemail to text solution. This however isn’t a direct consumer product but will probably be sold as an add-on service to wireless/wire line service providers and will integrate with their voicemail systems. The end-user would get the transcribed voicemail as an e-mail or a text (SMS) message.

Earlier this year, we had reported on Simulscribe which we tried and we very impressed with. At this point, they’re still offering a free 30-day trial for GfG readers.

Wikipedia congratulates self for hitting 10M article mark, wishes it was real money
Publishing 10 million articles across 250 languages is not an easy task, but Wikipedia has managed to do exactly that. OK, maybe collectively millions of volunteer workers from around the world did the job for them, but still, this is an event that cannot go uncelebrated. And to think, a lot of other web sites are struggling with just hitting their 1-millionth article mark. Wikipedia is happy that it has reached it’s 10-millionth article with a Nicholas Hilliard write-up, made by user Pataki Márta on the Hungarian Wikipedia web site. And while it’s nice to see Wikipedia steadily increase in popularity and volume of content, one can’t help but feel bad for them knowing that they are barely able to sustain their growing business from within. G-Dog — Not Your Friendly-Looking Cuddly Toy Dog

Written by admin on Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 in gadgets.

We’ve all seen the Robo-Dog. Unfortunately, it’s made for the military, so us civilians can’t even dream of owning one. But then, there’s G-Dog, and all my woes were whisked away.

Well okay, I don’t exactly dream of owning a robot dog which can shred me to bits. Cute and cuddly is more like it. But if you want a not-so-friendly-looking robot pet, G-Dog is one fine option. It’s actually a DIY machine, and comes as a kit that includes seven motors, 7.2 V battery, and AC adapter, RPU-11 controlling unit, software for motion programming, and 3 axial acceleration sensor. the body of the dog is made of resin and everything else, I presume, is metal.
