Datto NAS Backup

Written by admin on Saturday, April 5th, 2008 in gadgets.

Datto NAS Backup
Datto’s NAS backup brings to the table 500GB of storage space which ought to be more than enough for the average home PC user who makes copies of his/her Word documents and spreadsheets only. Should you think that 500GB is way too large for your needs, there is always a 100GB version (I personally would have preferred a 250GB model instead). Should your unit actually buckle up and die, a backup will be delivered to your home in less than 24 hours. The 100GB and 500GB models will retail for $399 and $599 respectively, and will be accompanied by a $99 and $249 annual fee. (Read the full post about ‘Datto NAS Backup’…)

Comcast “Wideband” High-Speed Internet Could Reach 160Mbps

Written by admin on Saturday, April 5th, 2008 in gadgets.

160Mbps is a peak theoretical number of course, but still, it should be significantly faster that any consumer connection when it comes out. At the moment, only Mineapolis and St-paul residents can benefit from a 50 Mbps offer that could eventually reach 160Mbps. It doesn’t come for cheap ($150 per month), but I guess that there is a good niche of customers who would sign up.

It always bugs me to see that we’re in @#$^ Silicon Valley and that I am stuck with a 6Mbps DSL connection and a 16Mbps cable one.

Super Talent Unveils Super Slim SSD

Super Talent Unveils Super Slim SSD
One little fact about Solid State Drives (SSDs) is often overlooked. There’s no speed penalty for size. While a 2.5″ laptop hard drive typically spins at just 5,400 rpm compared to 7,200 rpm for a bigger 3.5″ desktop unit, there is no such compromise for solid state memory. The only limitation is how many chips you can squeeze into the box. Which is why we expect the World’s Smallest claims to come thick and fast in the near future, starting with this 256GB SSD from OEM supplier Super Talent . The FSD56GC25H (try pronouncing that) is just 12.5mm (0.5″) thick and has, according to Super Talent, also been ruggedized. (Read the full post about ‘Super Talent Unveils Super Slim SSD’…)

US Census Bureau to ditch handhelds for 2010 census

Written by admin on Saturday, April 5th, 2008 in gadgets.

The Census Bureau will not be going as high-tech in 2010 as originally planned, instead holding firm to the good old fashion pen and paper method. The lack of the GPS for census worked was due in part to “numerous glitches” that included the need for more workers as well as “recent increases in gas prices, postage, and printing.” That means that Congress is having to find an additional $3 billion to cover the cost, which could now rise as high as $14.5 billion.

The 2010 census, which will begin in March 2010 when the Census Bureau sends out a mailing to all US households, the 580,000 census workers will then be going door to door in an attempt of speaking with those that failed to return the form.

Windows XP lives, on low-cost computers

Written by admin on Saturday, April 5th, 2008 in gadgets.

Microsoft will not be killing off Windows XP this June as expected, instead it has been given an extension of life, sadly it was not due to the Save Windows XP Campaign that we saw, but instead because of the recent surge in low-cost computers such as the Eee PC, Cloudbook and recently announced 2go PC.

Microsoft has announced that Windows XP Home will be available until at least June 2010 and for one year after Windows 7 is released, which could mean we will see availability through 2011 and possibly into 2012.
