Gadgetell Quick Review: Kensington Slimblade Presenter Media Mouse

Written by admin on Thursday, July 3rd, 2008 in gadgets.

The first time my dad used a mouse, he held it like a remote control, waving it futilely at the screen. The folks at Kensington may have witnessed this, for they’ve created the Slimblade Presenter Media Mouse, a mouse that actually can be used as a remote—to control PowerPoint presentations and iTunes playlists.

A navigation pad on the flip side of the mouse allows the user to click through slides while pointing out important details with a laser pointer. For leisure time, a switch puts the remote in media mode, allowing it to operate basic functions in iTunes: play/pause, next/previous track and volume.

Apparently, law enforcement is seriously stepping into the 21st century. According to a report, police dep artments in Boston, Cincinnati and over 100 other communities have begun using a text message tip-line in the hopes that cellphone-savvy youngsters will alert them if they see a crime being committed, or know of one ahead of time. “It’s obvious that the future of communication is texting,” said Boston Police Crime Stoppers commander (and techno-visionary) Michael Charbonnier, adding that the department’s system as yielded, “Some great drug information, specific times, dates, names of suspects, locations, pickup times, [and] license plate numbers.” The only roadblock? Research institute hopes to send “brain breathalyzer” into space
by Donald Melanson, posted Jul 3rd 2008 at 12:58PM While it’s not nearly exciting as their Space Cycle (but really, what is?), the National Space Biomedical Research Institute’s new brain scanner here looks to fill in a niche of its own nonetheless and, if the institute has its way, it could actually find its way into space. Described as a “brain breathalyzer,” the device promises to monitor astronauts for signs of brain injury, depression and mental fatigue, which could allow mission control to determine if they’re capable of carrying out a mission or not. That’s done with the use of an optical scanner that sends weak pulses of near-infrared light into the brain, which gets reflected back to determine the amount of oxygen in the blood. It is official - the Firefox 3 browser from Mozilla has set a new Guinness World Record for the largest number of software downloads within 24 hours. More than 8 million people downloaded Firefox 3 on that day, and it could have been more if not for some glitches which resulted in downtime. How will the browser battles pan out in the near future? How much more ground do you think Internet Explorer will cede to Safari and Firefox?

Google Maps with Voice Search

Written by admin on Thursday, July 3rd, 2008 in gadgets.

The BlackBerry Pearl has just received support for Google Maps with voice search, and the “afflicted” models are the BlackBerry 8110, 8120 and 8130 (US Only). The search function can be downloaded here when accessed by your blackberry, and after installation you can speak your search simply by pressing the left-side key. Once you’re done mentioning the location of your choice, Google Maps for mobile devices will automatically get to its task and throwing out the most relevant locations. Interesting and definitely a novelty - I wonder just how wide its usage will be like.

The USB LED Light Tube Speaker

Written by admin on Thursday, July 3rd, 2008 in gadgets.

Sometimes Sci-Fi themed speakers can come off overly cheesy.  Usually due to too many details on very cheap materials.  This new USB speaker is fairly simple in looks and manages to just look cool without being over the top.  Somehow, Brando has managed to come out with a lighted speaker without it looking like it should be paired with a blacklight or lava lamp.  Although it still looks overly fitting for a geeky room, it still is not what I’d call tacky.

It doesn’t really look nearly as interesting with the blue light off, and I’m curious how the light looks when it is bright in the room.  I still find it cool though, and it’s not overly expensive.  Which seems to be the other direction that Sci-Fi themed electronics go.  They are either tacky or expensive, one of the two.  Brando’s USB LED Light Tube Speaker is currently being sold for $22.  It comes with all the usual things every other USB speaker comes with, the speaker, a USB power cable as well as an audio cable.  Nothing exciting there, and it probably won’t impress any audiophiles but it is a neat little novelty speaker.
